Yanqing County to the north west of Beijing contains the 960 hectare site to be used for the expo. Already an important tourist destination within China the area has beautiful scenery, clean air and one of the best places to view the Great Wall of China (Badaling). The expo hopes to welcome over 16 million visitors and over 100 exhibiting participants. The setting for the expo lies within a carefully protected environmental conservation area with the wide Gui River running through the middle of it. Planning for the site is giving careful consideration to continuing to preserve the environment in the area whilst also becoming a large horticultural show piece. This means considerable effort is going into planning for restoring the site after the expo. A new high-speed rail link is being constructed to the site and planning/design work has commenced.
